If you live on the east coast, as we do, some of these locations seem like dream vacation getaways. And, when you can pair that beauty with your love of sports and competitions then it appears to be a win. Here are the cities that are calling you:
- Spokane, Washington- While not a huge city in Washington, there’s a massive love of tourism and sporting events. They host the world’s largest 3 on 3 basketball tournament called, Hoopfest. This competition takes place in June and includes about 250,000 players. There’s also a timed road race every year. That’s the Lilac Bloomsday Run. It started in 1977 and generally attracts right around 50,000 runners every year.
- San Diego, California- Field and youth sports are especially popular in this locale. The Elite Clubs National League (a youth soccer organization) has hosted its playoffs and national competitions there. In September of 2017 they will be hosting the first Association of National Olympic Committees World Beach Games (read more). This will include 22 sports over the course of 10 days of games. People from 200 countries, totaling 40,000 for opening and closing attendance, are expected to participate.
- Oakland, California- Dragon boating is a big deal in Oakland. There’s the Oakland Dragon Boat Festival in August and the San Francisco International Dragon Boat Festival in September. If you don’t know anything about dragon boating you should click here. The Oakland Convention Center is no stranger to sporting events. It has hosted volleyball, boxing, and gymnastics. While the Oakland Ice Center is a great place for curling and NHL events. More importantly is the annual Oakland triathlon which boasts being the largest triathlon on the West Coast.
- Anchorage, Alaska- A 40 year tradition draws runners to this destination for the Anchorage Mayor’s Marathon, Half Marathon and 5K. It happens during the solstice where the longest day lasts 22 hours. Roughly 4,000 runners competed in this year’s event. Downhill and Nordic skiing are really big competitions there as well. This is not to negate the Native Youth Olympic (NYO) Games. This is a festive time that is supported by the Cook Inlet Tribal Council. Alaska’s indigenous culture is able to share its traditional games with the community. Things like the Eskimo Stick Pull and the Alaskan High Kick are celebrated in these competitions.
